Let's try DNA analysis – BioTechWorkshop part2

Date

Tue., March 12 – Sun., March 17

We are kicking off this “hand-on” series in the hope of making biotechnology more accessible to the general public. What can we actually do with biotechnology? The goal of this workshop is for participants to get a feel of using biotechnology by dividing life into the three phases of “observing,” “editing,” and “creating.” In this simple DNA testing experiment, we will begin by focusing on the DNA sequences of cows and pigs, and “observing” the differences between them. On the first day of the experiment, we will extract DNA from the liver and replicate the corresponding DNA segment. The following morning, this segment will be cut into smaller DNA fragments of various lengths. The fragments will be divided into groups for “visualization.” You will become familiar with the techniques of biotechnology after these 10 hours, in which time you will use actual laboratory equipment such as pipettes and learn the basics of biotechnology in a hands-on manner.

Instructor

JK・Chan

Employed at a multinational securities firm. Has held reading sessions of "High School Biology textbooks" for working people since 2010. Speaker at the Roppongi Hills "Asakatsu" (morning activity) event on the same theme. Completed MIT's "7.00x Secret of Life" MOOC course. Currently struggling his way into BIO studies.

Daniel Sangorrin

Works with embedded Linux. DIY and electronic kit building, he has been an exhibitor at Maker Faire. He has been interested in BIO since a young age. He is particularly interested in the reasons why we age. After completing several course at edX, he participates at BioClub in order to conduct experiments at an actual lab. He is still studying, but looks forward to meeting you.
